A blowing exhaust, a rattle from underneath, a smell of fumes or an engine warning light with a catalyst fault code all point to the exhaust system. On Volkswagen TSI petrol engines, the exhaust also carries the oxygen sensors that the engine uses to control fuelling, and on newer models a petrol particulate filter. Orange Auto finds the source of the leak or noise, then repairs or replaces flex pipes, gaskets, hangers, heat shields, silencers, sensors or catalytic converters, using genuine or quality OEM parts.
We start the car with you to hear the noise or find the smell, and note when it happens: cold start, idle or under load.
The engine module is scanned for catalyst efficiency, oxygen sensor and particulate filter faults, and live sensor data is checked.
With the car raised, we check the manifold joint, flex pipe, gaskets, silencers, hangers and heat shields for leaks, cracks, rust and loose fixings.
We show you what we found and explain whether a gasket, clamp, section or whole component needs replacing, with the cost before we start.
Leaking joints get new gaskets, broken hangers and rattling heat shields are secured, and failed sections, sensors or converters are replaced.
With the engine running, we confirm there are no leaks and check that the oxygen sensor readings are normal.
Fault codes are cleared and the car is road tested to confirm it is quiet and the warning light stays off.
Engine warning light with misfires as well? See Volkswagen engine repair. For corrosion underneath, ask about Volkswagen rust proofing.
A leak near the front of the exhaust can let fumes into the cabin. If you smell exhaust inside the car, have it checked straight away.
A flashing engine light means misfires, which send unburnt fuel into the catalytic converter and can overheat it. Fix the misfire first to protect the catalyst.
Many underbody rattles on Golf and Tiguan models are loose heat shields or a worn rubber hanger, which are quick, low-cost fixes.
Newer petrol models with a particulate filter, and diesel Touaregs with a DPF, regenerate best with regular longer drives rather than only short trips.
Why is my Volkswagen exhaust louder than usual?Usually a leak from a split flex pipe, a failed gasket or a corroded silencer. We find the exact source before quoting.
Can a leaking exhaust trigger the engine light?Yes. A leak before an oxygen sensor can upset its readings and set a fault code.
Do I need a new catalytic converter for a catalyst code? Not always. A faulty sensor or an exhaust leak can cause the same code, so we test before replacing anything.
